Chapter 62: Loser Does the Dog Impression
"Aunt Ella, it's just for fun. No big deal if you lose," Jason Reynolds said, pulling her into a chair
"Okay," Sonya nodded.
"Whoever loses the most has to... uh... do a dog impression and post it online! James Olinor suggested excitedly.
"Get outta here, don't scare her, Rose White snapped, glancing at James Ofinor
James Olivor pouted. "What's the big deal? It's not
like it's
a big deal "Go ahead, if you want to. I promise you'll go viral, little bro! Jason Reynolds chimed in James Olivor clicked his tongue, but persisted, tilting his chin at Sonya Aunt Ella, you in? Sonya shrugged. "Olivorre, why not?"
"Hey, Aunt Ella agreed! No backing out, you two!"
Jason Reynolds looked at Sonya worriedly. She smiled reassuringly. I play Mahjong, I shouldn't lose too badly."
"It's different with them. They count cards."
"They do? How?"
Jason Reynolds sighed, regretting inviting her. Oh well, he could just let her win
"Whoever throws the game is a loser!" James Olivor added.
"You're the loser! Your whole family are losers!" Jason Reynolds kicked James Oliver
The game began. Sonya lost the first round, getting completely trumped. The second round, she went out with a bang - twice. Her luck was atrocious. Jason Reynolds tried to let her win, but her speed at going out made it impossible.
But from the third round onward, she seemed to find her footing. She started winning, then going out, winning again, with every kind of winning hand imaginable.
James Olivor was stunned, studying Sonya suspiciously, convinced she was cheating
"Aunt Ella, where did you learn to play Mahjong like that? Jason Reynolds asked
"From the old ladies in my neighborhood. When they were short a player, they'd call me in. I learned slowly," Sonya explained. "Eventually, I started winning too much, and they stopped inviting me, saying I should study instead of taking advantage of them." In the end, James Olivor was howling in defeat. Jason Reynolds was equally frustrated, while Rose White remained calm and quiet.
"Aunt Ella, can I have a cigarette?" Jason Reynolds asked.
"No, thank you," Sonya replied firmly.
Seeing Jason Reynolds put away his cigarettes, James Olivor scoffed. "When did master Reynolds become so chivalrous?"
Jason Reynolds kicked James Olivor."In our family, my uncle is at the top of the pyramid, and my aunt is the apple of his eye, so she's the tip-top of the tip-top. I naturally listen to her." James Olivor eyed Sonya again."Your uncle actually married....; 50.0%

"Enough talk, or we don't play anymore," Rose White said sharply.

Sonya was surprised Rose White was defending her. James Olivor was clearly unfriendly, so she wasn't going to be polite. After winning several more hands, James Olivor ended up at the bottom.
"It's getting late. Let's call it a night," Rose White said.
James Olivor wailed, "No! I haven't had a chance to win back!"
Jason Reynolds chuckled, pulling out his phone."Alright, Mr. Olivor, let's hear it - loud and clear!" James Olivor wiped a tear, but kept his word, barking a few woofs at the phone screen. Jason Reynolds delightedly posted it online. "Aunt Ella, check it out later. It'll definitely trend," Jason Reynolds said excitedly.
"Really?" Trending so easily?
"He loves showing off and being in the spotlight. He's got a huge following; he's practically a celebrity."
"Practically? I *am* a celebrity! Those stars don't have my clout!"
James Olivor dragged Jason Reynolds off to play video games, vowing to sleep over. Sonya
offered to see Rose White off.
"I drove here. Need a ride?" Rose White asked.
"I'm staying here tonight, thanks," Sonya smiled.
Rose White nodded. "I hear you're a doctor?"
"Yes, but I'm not working at a hospital right now." "And now?"
"I'm... sort of unemployed."
Rose White smiled. "In that case, could you help me with something?"
"What?"
"My first TV series as a screenwriter and producer is starting filming. There are a lot of dangerous stunts, and I'd like a doctor on set. Would you be interested?"
"I'm an OB/GYN, so..."
"Director Davis is my teacher. He recommended you. Said you make a great cooling tea. Don't worry, we've taken every precaution for safety; major accidents are unlikely, but minor bumps. and bruises are always possible. Having a doctor on set would put everyone at ease." "I'll consider it. Is that okay?"
"Of course."
As Sonya saw Rose White off, Rose White added, "Say hello to Henry for me."
""Will do."
That night, Sonya slept in Henry's room. Linda brought out three large photo albums filled with pictures of Henry as a child.
"I imagined this scene when he was still a baby. He'd grow up, marry, and I'd show these albums

Linda was excited, urging Sonya to get into bed and look through them together. As soon as Sonya sat down, Linda eagerly opened the album.
"Here, this is him right after he was born. So ugly, right? Like a wrinkled monkey." Sonya laughed. "Newborns are like that. The vernix dries up, skin gets flaky, reddish, wrinkled. But as they grow, the swelling goes down, and it all disappears."
"See, he gets better-looking with each picture."
Henry perfectly inherited Linda's looks-delicate, soft features that would have been feminine, but his demeanor was aristocratic and proud, with a mischievous glint when he smiled. "This is his third birthday picture. So chubby and cute," Linda said, kissing the photo. "Henry was so chubby!" He was adorable.
Further into the albums, his baby fat was gone, he was taller, elegant, and his refined air was evident; clean and noble. Turning to his middle school photos, there was a picture of him playing the violin.
Seeing that photo, Linda sighed."During that time, his father made some plans for him without consulting him. He was furious and insisted on learning music-not because he loved it, but simply to rebel. If he'd been allowed to study music, he wouldn't have run away, and wouldn't have met... ahem..."
"This child is always cheerful, but he's incredibly stubborn."
Sonya looked at Henry in that picture; so beautiful, so pure. It was hard to imagine all he endured during that year.
And he met Jasmine Smith, right?noveldrama
Perhaps it was a woman's intuition, but she felt that Jasmine Smith was someone special in Henry's life during that time.
