When Love Turns Cold

CHAPTER 46

The temperature had been rising since the beginning of July. The weather forecast issued a red alert due to the high temperature of 95 degrees Fahrenheit, which had persisted for a week.

After repeated calculations and verifications, there was finally some progress in Paul’s experiment.

With great difficulty, he managed to find some time to take a rest. He dragged his tired. body up to the seventh floor, ready to get some sleep and recharge his energy.

Suddenly, he heard a loud noise coming from the apartment opposite to his.

Paul’s hand paused on the door handle, and he turned to look at the tightly closed door across from him. He stepped forward and knocked on the door. “Miranda, are you at home?

There was no response. He knocked a second time, but there was still no response.

Paul hesitated for a moment. He was thinking of whether to call the police when he heard a click, and the door finally opened.

Miranda peered out through a small crack, her body hidden behind the door. “Is something the matter?”

Her expression was calm. It seemed she’d only answered the door because he’d knocked. Her tone was even as usual, without any hint of distress.

Yet, for some reason, Paul felt like she wasn’t in a good mood. She seemed like a rose that had lost its vitality and was about to wither away.

Paul remained silent for a moment as Miranda looked at him, puzzled.

Suddenly, he said, “You mentioned last time that you’re writing a thesis. How’s it going?”

Miranda replied, “I finished the thesis and submitted it two weeks ago. These past two months, I’ve been revising my books and waiting for the results.”

Paul adjusted his glasses. “I have a half–finished thesis here. Would you be interested in taking a look?”Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.

Miranda was taken aback. “What?”

20 minutes later, Miranda was at Paul’s apartment. She sat on the couch and read the thesis in her hands, her eyes sparkling with interest.

Paul’s thesis was about biological sequences and discussed the change in energy value during the initial biological change.

Although the subject matter wasn’t novel, his approach was unique, and the verification methods he proposed were unprecedented.

His thesis had the potential to introduce new conclusions and methods. However, innovation required a large amount of strong and valid data to support it.

“Is this your thesis?” Miranda asked.

Paul nodded. “I wrote this in my sophomore year.”

Miranda felt a mix of emotions. It was no wonder that the professors at the Faculty of Bioinformatics still lamented Paul’s decision to give up on biology and choose physics as his major, even though it had already been many years.

It was as if fate had prepared his future calling on a silver platter. It was unheard of for a sophomore student to write a thesis of this caliber.

“Why didn’t you submit this thesis?” she asked.

“I thought it could be even more perfect. Look here. These two sections don’t have sufficient experimental data to support the conclusions.

“After I switched majors, physics.became my entire focus. I didn’t have extra time to finish this thesis.” As he said this, a hint of regret flashed in Paul’s eyes.

Miranda pondered for a moment before saying, “Then, why are you showing it to me

now?”

“Dr. Young sent me your undergraduate thesis some time ago, asking if I could help suggest a new research topic. That was when I discovered that you’d worked on a similar topic before.”

Paul pointed to the thesis in Miranda’s hands and said, “So, I wanted to ask if you’re interested in continuing my research.”

A feeling stirred within Miranda when she heard this, as if something deeply buried in her heart was about to burst forth. She hadn’t set foot in a lab since she’d graduated.

“Do you think I could do it?” Although she hadn’t been in a lab for a long time, all the procedures were fresh in her mind.

Nonetheless, she still felt a little apprehensive. She was unsure whether she could adapt. to the fast pace of working in a lab like she’d done before.

Paul replied, “There would be no problem as long as you have the will. In October next year, the National Science Institute will be forming a research team. Students pursuing their Master’s or Doctorate programs are free to apply.

“The research topic is related to genome sequences as well. If you can get into the
