Chapter 21
I stood there frozen as I stared in horror at two enormous black wolves that had emerged from the forest.
I was sure that I was done for. I was dead. This is how I was going to die.
But when the wolves didn't attack, I slowly started breathing again.
They walked closer to me. Really slow, like they were trying not to scare me or something.
They came right up in front of me and the one on the right grabbed the dress out of my hands and started running around and jumping around playfully with it.
I stood there in disbelief for a moment, watching this huge beast that could kill me in seconds just playing like a little puppy dog.
I looked at the other one and he sat on his haunches with his tongue hanging out. Also looking like he wasn't going to attack me.
I actually started to relax a little and I saw a log that was a few feet away.
I walked over to it slowly while they watched me and I sat down on the log, realizing that I was still in my underwear. So I looked at the other wolf.
"Can I have my uniform back please?" I asked. But he was sitting on the other side of the clearing wagging its tail.
The other one came and sat right next to me and rested its head on the log that I was sitting on. So I slowly reached over and patted it on its nose.
The other one walked over with my dress in it's mouth but when I tried to grab my dress it jumped backwards again. Not letting me take it.
"You must be the cheeky one." I said, looking at him.
"I can't believe I'm sitting in the forest, half naked taking to a couple of fucking wolves." I said, chuckling at the absurdity of the situation. But the one next to me moved closer and nudged me with its nose.
"You are a beauty, aren't you? How did you two get to be so damn big? Are all you Alaskan wolves this big?" I asked, patting it on its nose and then its head. He didn't seem to mind.
"Maybe you two are the best ones I can talk to." I said letting out a sigh, listening to the wind pick up and whistle through the trees.
"I don't have anyone else at the moment. I wish I could be free like a wolf. I bet it's great. Running around the forest, not having to worry about being bullied at school or having that bully attack you whenever she sees you. I wish Leia would fuck off. She thinks I want her boyfriend.
Everyone in this town hates me. I'm an outsider. I just moved here a couple of months ago and this isn't a good place to be an outsider. I got invited to a party last night where that same bitch tried to arrange for some guy to rape me. I think he spiked my drink. And to make things even worse, he told me that these guys that I know, Tristan and Nathan, were in on it. Leia wanted me to know that they were in on it. I thought they liked me. I was an idiot." I said. And both of the wolves growled softly. It didn't scare me, but it did get my attention. I wondered if they could actually understand me since they both reacted at the same time to what I just said. I must really be going crazy.
"Shush. It's alright. But then I had to go home to a mother who only keeps me around because she receives monthly checks for keeping me. Which, by the way, if she doesn't get a lost check by tomorrow she's kicking me out. And I know that
she will. She's been wanting to get rid of me for ages." I explained.
I looked down at the wolves and realized that they were staring at me, intently. Almost like they were taking in everything I was saying. But that was ridiculous. They were wolves. They couldn't understand what I was saying.
I have to admit though. They didn't really act like normal wolves.
I saw the first wolf sitting right in front of me with my dress still in its mouth, so I quickly grabbed my dress off of it and it jumped up wagging its tail and then jumped on me, pushing me backwards off of the tree log.
It didn't hurt me, it was on top of me and felt really heavy and I was sure that I had
a couple of splinters in my legs, but I started laughing, making it known that I was having trouble breathing.
So it jumped off of me and I was able to get up and I put my dress on, but it was covered in wolf slobber.
I ran around the tree branch and into the clearing, with both of the wolves jumping up and down and running circles around me.
I finally collapsed in the middle of the clearing, staring up at the sky and both of the wolves laid down next to me, one on either side.
I couldn't believe how much joy I felt right now. How I actually felt alive again, right now. And it was because of these two animals.
Ava was jumping around in my head, she wasn't saying anything but I could feel her sense of enjoyment as well. How much she was loving this as well. Where we could actually be free and run around and laugh. I don't really remember the last time I laughed. It's been a long time since I laughed like this. With pure heart and not just because it was expected of me.
"Can I tell you two a secret? I've saved enough money from my job that I can finally afford to get back to Seattle." I said, noticing that they both put their heads up and looked at me like they understood me.
I looked at them strangely when they did that, but I assumed that it was just a reflex because I had started talking to them.noveldrama
"I know it sucks. I finally found two friends in this town and now I'm leaving. But I have to. I'm trapped here. I can't live in that house any longer." I admitted.
They both started crawling up closer to my face. They had sad looks on their faces. Real puppy dog looks on their faces. So I started patting them both.
"And after just one afternoon with you two, I think I'm going to miss you guys most of all." I smiled at them.
One of them got really close and suddenly licked my face, making me laugh as I tried to wipe the slobber off my face.
We were interrupted by my phone ringing and I moaned in frustration.
"I have to go guys. I hope I see you again before I leave." I said, patting them
again and I stood up and walked over to get my bag.
I looked back at the wolves and they were both sitting in the middle of the clearing. So I grabbed my phone and I pointed it at the wolves and took a photo of them before I left. I wanted to remember them forever. My friendly wolves.
The phone started ringing again as I was walking through the forest and it said Celie's name on it.
"Hello." I answered.
"Hi sweetie. How are you doing?" She asked. And I let out an exasperated sigh.
"I'm doing alright. I guess. You caught me at a good time." I said, smiling about the wolves again. Wondering if I would see them again. I was hoping that I would. "That's good. I was hoping it wasn't too miserable there for you." She said.
"Well, it's the first good time I've really had since I've been here. So, what does that tell you?" I asked. And I heard her sigh on the other end of the phone. She knew exactly what Marilyn and Jack were like. So, she knew that no matter where I was, I was always going to be miserable with them.
"I'm sorry to hear that." She said.
"I haven't heard from you in a while." I said.
"I know. I'm sorry. I was going to call you tomorrow. But I thought today would be
better. Are you at home?" She asked.
"No." I said, looking around the forest that I was happily walking peacefully through right now.
"Good. I got a call from Marilyn today." She announced.
"Why the hell that bitch calling you?" I shouted, louder than I meant to I was pissed that Marilyn would call her. I didn't want Marilyn anywhere near her.
"Well, she was calling to inform me of your dire situation. That you were fired from your job and that you really needed money." Celie said.
"What? I wasn't fired." I said.
"I didn't think so. I didn't want to send the money to those greedy SOB's so I told them that I was going to call you and make an arrangement for you to receive the money as soon as possible. But it's the weekend so nothing can be done until next week." Celie said. I knew that Celie would always be on my side and she would never believe anything that Marilyn said. Marilyn can manipulate any situation that she wants.
"Thank you. She told me that if I didn't have the money here tomorrow then she was going to kick me out." I admitted. And it got quiet on the other side of the phone for a moment. I could only imagine what was going through Celie's mind right now.
"So, it's gotten worse?" Celie guessed.
"Yeah. Jack tries to get his hands on me whenever he can. Marilyn is a greedy bitch who still makes me pay for everything myself. I'm not allowed to eat their food or anything like that. They are pretty much treating me worse than people treat a dog." I explained.
"I am so sorry sweetie. You deserve so much better than that." She said, sincerely. I felt bad about dumping all of this on her knowing that she can't do anything from Seattle.
"There's something else that I want to talk to you about. Something happened last night and I don't know what to do." I said.
So
I explained the strength to knock that guy out and how I found my way home in
the woods and how my bones felt like they were breaking and then healing again.
And how painful it was. I told her that I could still feel the pain now. Just not as bad, obviously.
"That must have been really scary. I'm so glad that you were able to defend yourself against that guy." She said.
"Yeah. But I'm not concerned about him. What do I do about the rest? I mean, can you even explain that stuff to me?" I asked, concerned. I didn't have any answers and I was hoping that Celie would. She has been the only one who told me to embrace Ava. She never treated me like I was crazy for hearing voices.
"All I can really do is tell you to follow Ava's guidance. She'll know what to do when the time is right. Trust me on this." She said.
"I do trust you Celie. More than anyone else." I said.
"I'm glad to hear it. And as for the money, someone will be bringing you some financial aid very soon." Celie asked.
"Who?" I asked, confused. Why would she be sending an actual person to come and see me?
"That's all I can say for now. Just trust Ava as well. She knows what she's doing
and what's best for you." Celie said.
"I'll try." I said.
What do you think?
