Chapter I Maya
It never crossed my mind that I would testify in favor of the Alpha who killed my mate. Or that I
would testify against the girl who was supposed to be my best friend. Now, I am truly alone
Lydia was sentenced to three years, not that I want anything to do with her after what she made Deacon do. Unfortunately, now the entire city knows, yet they don't know the reason why
How I ended up with Deacon for a mate still escapes me. Could the moon goddess truly be that cruel to make me share a mate with my best friend, one I could never compete against? They may know Deacon rejected me, but they'll never know the reason why. Deacon thankfully took that to his grave; I don't think I could handle any more shame
The moment the hearing was over I was out of my seat heading to the doors before I had to listen to murmurs and judgment. I didn't want their pity and I certainly didn't want their scrutiny. How did everything spiral so far out of control? All I know is Iam glad it is over with
now, though his death still torments me I know it will just be something else to deal with. As if I haven't got enough on my plate
The courtroom doors swing shut behind me, and I'm just glad to be out of here finally. The click of my heels on the pristine floor 1s loud as I head for the doors, needing to get ready for work, and hopefully sneaking in a nap beforehand. I keep my head high, my posture perfect-the epitome of the elite member of Luna Cleo's pack that everyone believes me to be. But beneath the surface, beneath the tailored clothes that are slightly too big, mom 1s taller than me. And beneath the well-manicured facade, is someone they'll never see
The trial is over, and the court has ruled in favor of Alpha Zayn, absolving him of any wrongdoing in the death of my mate, Deacon, and the death of a rival alpha. It's the outcome I
fought for and testified for, even if it feels like a betrayal
As I push through the courthouse doors, the brisk air of early autumn bites at my skin. I wrap my coat tighter around me, trying to ward off the chill that's more internal than external. Luna Cleo waits outside, her baby bump showing under her blazer. I saw her leave toward the end, unable to face her father when he was called to the stand. I am still in shock that she is pregnant; she is a year and half younger than me, and I am only twenty-one. I couldn't even fathom having a baby, but maybe because I would have no help. She has Alpha Zayn and two entire packs, hers and his, that have been merged now
Noticing me, she pushes off the hood of the car she leans against. Her blonde hair styled to perfection, she is glowing and I am happy for
her, she finally got justice against everyone who wronged her. But while she got justice I got my name dragged through the mud. Her eyes meet mine, a softness there I rarely let myself acknowledge

"You did the right thing, Maya," Cleo says, her voice carrying to me. I pause, knowing I can't ignore her; she is my Luna, after all, but that doesn't mean I want to have this discussion
I nod, not because I agree but because it's expected. "Your mate didn't give me much of a choice," I say, my voice steady despite the bitterness that laces each word. Cleo chews her lip, reminding me of the girl she was before she took over her father's pack and now the city
"And this changes nothing. I may have helped, but that doesn't make us friends." Cleo seems shocked by my answer and goes to say something
Without waiting for her response, I turn on my heel and stride down the courthouse steps. "Tell your mom I said hello," I tense. It's amazing how little she notices, my mother has been gone for six years, and no one has noticed. No one except Cleo's father, my old Alpha, Alpha Joseph
After all, he was the one responsible for her going missing after all. Though now it makes me wonder how much harder it will be with him also in prison now. He was the one paying for my tuition through school, and now I am barely scraping by. I've since dropped out of university, unable to afford the tuition, and tossed my dreams of being the next pack doctor down the drain. A position he promised to me after what I witnessed
