Chapter 49
Chapter 49
“Do you feel bad that your father doesn’t know about the twins?”
“I don’t know but maybe it is all for the best. He has always wanted Grandchildren. I feel he is going to freak out and won’t be able to keep the good news. My father and your father are close friends, he might tell Eric and once Eric knows, I fear that Vanessa and Connie would be aware too.”
Hailey sighed, massaging her temple. “See why I have always avoided you all? And at this point, I doubt restraining orders can
do anything. Now that Vanessa is pregnant, she is going to get even more vicious when she learns about
the twins.”
“I promise you that I am not the father of the bastard child she is carrying.”
“I am not accusing you of anything, Cole. I just feel like if you don’t belong to her, we are going to end up suffering for everything. She can’t live with the fact that you don’t like her and that you would rather be with me.”
“It sucks but you are right.”
“I don’t want you to bother about anything. I will deal with Vanessa and Connie on my own.”
Hailey nodded.
“So would you be resuming work tomorrow?”
Hailey shook her head. “I will work from home for the rest of this month. I will arrange for the boys to be homeschooled just to monitor Enzo.”
Cole nodded.
“I still can’t believe I didn’t get suspicious that you were pregnant.”
Hailey rolled her eyes at Cole and walked away.
“Babe! Are you angry with me?” He called, walking after her but she didn’t answer.
Hailey went to the bar stand in the living room and poured herself a glass of red wine. Then she proceeded to the couch to take her seat, ignoring Cole who was going after her like a lost puppy.
Cole took a seat, beside Hailey, facing her as she sipped on her wine. “This is the second time I am asking this and you are refusing to say anything.”
“What did you want me to say?”
“I want to know everything! From when you found out you were pregnant till date.” Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.
“Jessica is the worst when she is pregnant. She nags and falls sick so much. I know I didn’t spend much time with you but never did it cross my mind that you could be pregnant.”
“What a terrible human you are!” Hailey glared at Cole.” You can recognize your best friend’s symptoms but turn blind eyes to your wife.”
“If not that Jess is married with kids and I’ve got some trust in her, I would definitely think that you both are a thing.”
“I would never have a thing with Jess even if she were to be the last woman on earth and she knows that. We are just cool as friends and nothing more.”
“I know I was really horrible to you. You have no idea how much I hate myself everyday. I now know the true meaning when they say you don’t know the value of something until you’ve lost it. God knows I would do anything to go back and change amends.”
“I said I wasn’t going to ask again because I did want to upset you. But Enzo and Ollie’s request about wanting a
younger sibling made me really curious and for the first time ever, it hit me so hard about how much I’ve missed in you all’s life.”
“I found out I was pregnant the day we ended things. I was so happy that morning and I felt the pregnancy was going to be the beginning of amazing things in our lives. Plus it was also our third anniversary.”
“I presented you a gift that morning at the office. But you trashed it, telling me it was over. Remember?”
Cole starred in shame but he wanted to hear more.
“You said mean words to me that killed all the joy I had that day. I wasn’t feeling good so I decided to go home, hoping you would be calm when you come back from work and we would talk”
“I got home and met my bags out.”
Cole frowned. “How come?”
“I think I should be the one asking you that.”
“The security said you ordered so. Vanessa came out. We had a pretty heated conversation, I told her I was pregnant but……
Cole could feel his heart burning with so much anger. “Vanessa fucking knew that you were carrying my child?” He couldn’t believe that Vanessa was aware of something so important and she never said anything to him.
Hailey took more sips from her cup before responding.
She nodded.
“She pushed me. I fell and she kicked me on my belly.”
“What the hell, she wanted to kill the baby?”
“That was probably her intention.”
Cole cursed under his breath. “That butch! I should have killed her when I had the opportunity to do so.”
“What do you mean?” Hailey asked him.
“I went over to her place after I got to know she came to you with fake news about her pregnancy. I choked her and now I’m regretting why I didn’t choke her to death.”
“Me not talking about the past doesn’t mean I am hiding things from you. It just brings back a lot of painful memories. Especially now that I have healed from them.”
“She probably thought I lost the baby because I was bleeding. I called you but you weren’t answering. I passed out

and the next time I woke up, I saw myself in the hospital.”
“I remember Vanessa telling the security guard not to help me or else he would be sacked.”
“But he called his brother who took me to the hospital and fortunately my pregnancy was saved.”
“I am so sorry about everything.” Cole whispered. Hailey could see the remorse and sadness in his eyes.
“Then I saw you and Vanessa flaunting your new status on TV. It was clear I didn’t belong in your life so I decided to stay away just as you wanted.”
“I stayed in the hospital for one more week after which I was discharged.”
“I met Debbie the day I was discharged. I was crying bitterly at the reception. I had nowhere to go and no clue where to start from. I had never felt so scared and confused as I did at that moment. I needed a shoulder to lean on, a family member I could confide in but I was all alone.”
Debbie was there for a checkup so she approached me and comforted me. She took me in and started to take care of me. It was so strange how we bonded that easily even though she hardly knew me.”
“At some point, I contemplated getting an abortion but I couldn’t go through with it but Debbie was really against
it.”
“I was
a mess when I went for a scan and found out I was having twins. I cried so much that I felt sick from the news. I mean I was just accepting the reality of one kid. How the hell was I supposed to cope with two children?”
“I didn’t have a job because the pregnancy took a toll on me, I got sacked twice because I wasn’t productive. But Debbie didn’t complain. She kept taking care of me and never for once did She make me feel I was a burden.
“I gave birth to the twins and once again, Debbie was really helpful. Her mom came to live with us for three. months to help out. Debbie also hired a nanny to help out.”
“About 6 months after I birthed the twins, I got a visit from a lawyer about my grandparents leaving a trust fund for me. It was a lot of money that I almost went crazy. Apparently, I got to know that my grandparents were against my mom getting married to my dad so they cut her off. That’s why I got to inherit so much because my mom was the only child of my grandparents.”
“My Dad is really ruthless and the news made me cry to bed a couple of nights. I mean, my mom cut ties with the people that birthed her just so she could be with him and my Dad still had the guts to bring in a second wife and treated her unfairly. I still find my mother’s death a mystery and inasmuch as I would want to deny it, it’s a pain that I don’t think will ever heal.”
put the
money from the trust fund into good use and that is how I started ENROL. I worked so hard day and night and that is how I have achieved all I have today.”
“The rest is history.”
“And yeah, Ty was the one who linked me up with some of his business partners.”
“He is an amazing man but it is just so sad that I really cannot give him what he wants.”
Hailey gulped down the rest of the drink in her cup.
Her eyes went wide when she saw Cole kneel before her.
“What are you doing?” She mumbled, unsure.
He took the now empty glass cup from her hand and placed it on a nearby table after which he took her hands in
his.
“I know I have apologized to you severally but having heard from you all you went through, I now understand why you have been giving me cold shoulders.”
“I know no amount of apology can change the past or ease you from the pain of the past. I am so sorry, Hailey. I should have been there to protect you but I made things worse for you.
“Your Mom sacrificed her relationship with her parents just to be with your Dad but he never appreciated her.”
“You did the same too. You married me to save your family from shame and also help revive your father’s company but they never even showed you any ounce of love and your stepmother and sister continue to try you because they are jealous of you and your greatness.”

“I am so sorry for all the pain we’ve caused you, Hailey. I promise I am going to make it up to you from now onwards. And anyone who wants to mess with you or our kids doesn’t know What is coming for them because they would have to deal with me first.
“I am really sorry about everything I put you through. Please find a place in your heart to forgive me.”
Hailey shook her head.
Why?”
She shrugged.
“I don’t mind you giving me conditions. Just speak up. Let me know all that is going through your mind.”
Hailey said nothing.
Cole sighed, standing up. He sat beside Hailey, then pulled her to sit on his lap.
“What are you doing?” She whispered, her heart beating faster. She tried to move away from him but Cole wasn’t having it.
“Stay still. Please.”
“No, get off me.” She continued to struggle off his hold.
“Stay still babe, I have good intentions, I promise.”
Seeing that she wasn’t cooperating, Cole did the only thing he knew could humble her. He tilted her a little and smashed his lips against hers.
“Fuck, you taste so good!” Cole mumbled in between the soft and sensual kisses.
