Chapter 89 ~ Your patient
ATHENA
"Dr. Dawson, explain what can cause a series of cardiac arrests," Leah's voice slices through the room like a damn Scalpel.
My heart sinks.
Of course she'd call on me. Of all people.
It's been two days since I saw her son since Rayen threw his arms around me like
he knew me from another lifetime. Since Alex stared at me like the world had tilted sideways.
I hate that bastard but I'm grateful that he helped me with my panic attack. I've been getting help, and it's better, I actually thought it's gone.
So I guess I'll have to see D.r Quinn and let him know. I would have kept it a secret, but it won't help me, and if I'm going to take care of my patients, then I need to be my best self.
I've been trying to breathe normally ever since Alex's hands held me so tightly like
I would slip out of his hands if he loosened even a little.
I hate how fast my heart was beating. I hate him. Maybe I should have hit his head for touching me.
Help or not!
Maybe that's why her royal highness was nowhere to be seen yesterday. She must have been getting pampered after he felt guilty for even touching me.
But being a cheater he is, I doubt he has a conscience!
It was a miracle. Leah was not here. I thought maybe I could move through the rest of this week without another hostile standoff.
But clearly, I was delusional.
Today, she's back. With fire in her eyes and venom in her voice. And she made sure I was in her warpath.
I glance briefly at the patient file, just long enough to gather my thoughts before straightening my spine.
"A series of cardiac arrests can be caused by multiple underlying conditions," I say evenly, "such as electrolyte imbalances, particularly potassium or calcium irregularities, acute myocardial infarction, drug toxicity, or certain congenital heart disorders. In post-operative patients, hypoxia and tamponade should be immediately ruled out. Continuous monitoring and prompt identification of the cause is vital to prevent irreversible damage."
Silence.
I can feel my juniors watching me. One of them even looks impressed.
Leah simply smiles. But it's the kind of smile that makes you want to check for hidden daggers.noveldrama
"Good job," she says sweetly. "You can take charge of the patient.”
My stomach lurches.
What?
The file in her hands is for a high-risk patient. One that's been passed around the department like a live grenade. A complex case requiring minute-by-minute attention. It's not the kind of patient you hand to someone still in the middle of their rotations.
"Dr. Woods " I begin, forcing myself to stay respectful, "with all due respect, this case is extremely sensitive. I believe Dr. Mwape was already-"
She tilts her head, interrupting without raising her voice. "Are you about to reject a patient, Dr. Dawson?"
I freeze.
Her gaze holds mine, hard and unyielding.
"After all that preaching about saving lives and treating every case like it
matters... you're telling me you're not up for the job?"
My lips part.
She's backing me into a corner. In front of everyone, including the patient. And worst of all... she's using my own beliefs against me.
I want to say no. Not out of fear, but out of caution. Out of care. Because this patient deserves someone with more experience. Someone not still learning where all the emotional landmines are buried.
But if I say no, I give her everything she wants the opportunity to say I'm not ready. That I talk big, but 't
can't walk into fire. Then, she will
take away my fire to stand up for
patients. She wants to degrade me.
But she has another thing coming.
So I lift my chin.
"No," I say softly. "I'll take it."
Leah's smile widens.
"Excellent," she says, handing me the file.
"We'll be watching. If it gets too hard, you can ask me for help. I am your senior for a reason, after all." Then she turns on her heel and walks off, the other doctors trailing behind her like shadows. I stare down atthe folder in my hands. I don't know what game she's playing, but I've just been moved to the front line.
Rushing through the corridors, I knock on Doctor Whitmore's door.
"Enter." Her voice answers.
Slowly, I open the door and step in.
"Dr..Dawson. Why are you walking on your tiptoes?" She raises her brows.
"I'm sorry to disturb you. I need your help." I cash in the favor ticket she gave me.
After explaining the situation and what trap Leah has set for me, Isabelle nods. "What time is the operation scheduled?"
"4pm." I respond.
Isabelle looks at me, her eyes studying and calculating.
What do you think?
