Chapter 585
Chapter 585
Leah and Jacob were taken aback to see Lisa walk through the door. Today was supposed to be her court day, and Leah, having done her homework, expected Lisa to be looking at a minimum of seven years behind bars, given the charges. Over the past few weeks, Leah hadn't visited Lisa, but she had quietly pulled some strings to make her time in detention a bit more comfortable—at least Lisa got her own room and better living conditions than most.
Confident in the groundwork she had laid and with Jacob being discharged from the hospital, Leah had skipped the court appearance. She didn't fancy witnessing Lisa's potential outburst in court. With Lisa's fiery personality, Leah thought, let her do her time; she needs to learn a lesson. Once locked up, Leah planned to work on getting her sentence reduced. But to her surprise, Lisa walked right back home.
"How did you manage to get out?" Leah asked, a mix of surprise and confusion in her voice.
Lisa flashed a grin, "Disappointed, huh? I've been acquitted."
Leah was momentarily stunned. Could Chloe have backed out at the last second? But that seemed unlikely, especially on the day of the trial.
Lisa continued, "Why are you so shocked? Were you hoping I'd end up in prison? Let me tell you, you're my real parents, and you're stuck with me for life."
With that, Lisa bolted inside the house.
Jacob, still recovering and not ready for this kind of stress, was fuming, "Ungrateful girl, are you trying to finish me off?"
Fresh out of the hospital and not a single concern for his health from her, just venomous words.
"If you drop dead, it's not on me. Your partiality is to blame. I'm your biological daughter, yet you only see Chloe. If you die from anger, that's your own doing."
"Lisa! Watch your mouth!" Leah snapped, unable to take it anymore.
Lisa wouldn't have dared to speak to Jacob like this in the past he was the head of the family. But now, knowing she'd been cast aside, her true colors were showing.Property © NôvelDrama.Org.
"This is who I am, deal with it. I am your daughter, your blood runs through me. You want Chloe, but destiny had other plans. Parents like you deserve a daughter like me. I'm your own comeuppance."
"If you had even a fraction of Chloe's character, things would be different!" Jacob lamented, thinking back to when she first showed up with that paternity test. He should have sent her packing then.
"All you ever mention is Chloe. She's married Connor and hitched to the Shaw family. Let's see if she remembers you later!"
With a smug look, Lisa turned and marched back into the house.
Jacob was trembling with anger, his chest hurting. Leah put a hand on his arm, "Take it easy. You know your health can't handle this. Now that she's back, we'll just have to keep a firm hand on her."
Despite it all, Leah still felt a twinge of motherly affection for Lisa. She was her child, after all. And seeing Ann's unwavering support for Lisa as a foster mother, Ann had vowed never to abandon her. How could Leak her biological mother, do any less? Now that Lisa was back, it just meant one more mouth to feed. Leah wouldn't give her any more money to waste.

In her room, Lisa's anger boiled over, and she wanted to smash things, but there was nothing left to break. This only stoked her fury. She loathed Chloe. Without Chloe, shè wouldn't be in this mess, and Jacob and Leah wouldn't have turned so cold. She wished Chloe would just vanish so she could be at peace.
As this dark thought settled, Lisa unexpectedly found a calm. Yeah, if only Chloe could just disappear.
