Chapter 18 He Deserves It
Elora snorted coldly.
"I taught her how to behave. Why couldn't I ask her to serve me? We don't accommodate useless people."
Her words irked Darren.
"I have hired many servants to look after you and Bonita. Why did you still need Claire to do it?"
"What's wrong with that? Did she really think she could live a carefree life after marrying a wealthy man? Everything comes with a price. She can't take us for granted." Darren frowned.
"You shouldn't have treated her like a maid."
Elora looked at her son in surprise.
"Darren, what's wrong with you today? Why do you care about Claire all of a sudden? You never paid attention to all these before."
Darren fell silent.
Elora was right. He had been too busy to pay attention to what was happening in his house.
Elora was a mean old woman. She took another sip of the lobster soup and shouted, "She wasn't fortunate to be born into a wealthy family, so she wanted to fulfill her dreams by marrying a wealthy man.Thankfully, you divorced her.Marrying you to Claire was a huge mistake. That village bumpkin was a disgrace to our family. We should have married you to a sophisticated woman from a family that's equally powerful and influential to our Sampson family. That woman married you only for money."
Elora's voice grew a decibel higher as she spoke.
"By the way, how much money have you given her over the years? You must have certainly given more money to her than what you gave me and Bonita. How much did she demand after divorcing you? Did you pay her the alimony?"
"Enough!"
Darren couldn't stand it anymore. He took a deep breath and glared at his mother.
"Mom, Claire didn't ask me for any money. The divorce agreement didn't demand any alimony.Besides, she hasn't used a single penny from the money I had transferred to her account over the past three years."
Bile rose in his throat as his mother went on and on about money.
Darren had believed Claire wouldn't have gone through any problems because he had transferred money to her account on a regular basis. But he had never bothered to find out if she used the money of not.
Today, he finally understood the hardship she had endured over the years.
Only after they divorced did he find that Claire hadn't spent his money.
"What? That's impossible!"
Elora was surprised. Her face flushed with embarrassment.
"She must have secretly hidden the money somewhere.Darren, that woman is extremely cunning..."
Darren ignored her and walked away.
However, just as he walked to the second floor, he stopped and looked at Claire's room. His brows furrowed in confusion. He had thought money and a sophisticated life would make up for the loss of companionship.иσνєℓєвσσк.¢σмBut it had only hurt Claire.
During these past three years, she hadn't once complained about the pain and sufferings she had silently endured in this family.
But he had never cared about her.
Darren understood how disappointed she must have been to ask for a divorce. His heart sank as he thought about it.
The music blared in the bar, vibrating across the walls and floor.
Claire and Haylee were sitting in a booth in the corner.
Haylee looked at the phone and patted her thigh. This belongs © NôvelDra/ma.Org.
"Yes! Well done!"
"What's going on?" Claire asked in confusion.
Haylee grinned and handed the phone to Claire.
"Didn't I say I would make them pay the price for hurting you? I asked someone to write some articles to avenge you. They are finished now and will be released on the internet tomorrow."
Claire saw several headlines in bold letters.
"Darren Sampson Has a Secret Affair with a Popular Star."
"The Best Husband Is Actually Scum!"
"The President of Quantum Group Cheated on His Wife with a Popular Star. Are People Truly What They Seem to Be?"
"The Founder of Quantum Group Hooked up with a Popular Actress. Will His Scandal Affect the Stock Price of the Company?"
Haylee quickly typed the instructions and looked at Claire.
"I want the news about Darren to hit the headlines of every possible news category. That scum should face the wrath of the readers."
Claire picked up the glass and took a sip of wine as she recalled the unpleasant encounter with him at the banquet. The alcohol burned down her throat.
"He deserves it!" She sneered.
