Chapter 1014
As soon as Thaddeus vanished, it was like he dropped off the face of the earth for an entire month.
The CEO of the mighty Abernathy Group, a man of considerable influence, had just disappeared without a trace. Gordon was left behind to handle the pressing issues at the company, but there were still a mountain of documents that required Thaddeus's personal approval.
The "situation room" was a mess, and the "king's" desk was piled high with urgent reports.
Eventually, the truth couldn't be hidden any longer, and it reached the ears of Hamilton and Frederic Abernathy.
Thaddeus had barely escaped with his life in Helgen, gravely injured and in a
deep coma for a whole week, and only then did his grandfather and father learn of
it.
The fury and shock of being kept in the dark hit the two business titans like a bolt out of the blue, almost too much for them to bear.
Hamilton, on hearing the news, was rushed to the hospital that very night.
Frederic, meanwhile, flew to Helgen without delay and had his unconscious son transported back to Elmsworth on a top-of-the-line private jet, under the watchful care of Elmsworth's finest medical team.
Rumor had it that at the hospital, Frederic had a heated altercation with the Ashbourne family, creating quite the chaotic scene.
Relations between the two families plummeted to an all-time low, nearly beyond repair.
If it hadn't been for the commanding presence and leadership of the elder brother, who managed to calm things down after a half-hour private talk with Frederic, the situation could have escalated beyond imagination.
Frederic might have done something rash otherwise; that much was certain.
He had often criticized his younger son; their relationship had been strained for quite some time.
But Thaddeus was still his son, his flesh and blood!
Even though he was slowly coming to terms with his son's relationship with Evadne, he couldn't accept Thaddeus risking life and limb over and over again fornoveldrama
a woman.
His once-promising elder son was now practically a shadow of his former self. Thaddeus was his last hope; he had long accepted that he would eventually have to hand over the reins of the Abernathy Group to Thaddeus.
The Ashbourne family seemed to have little regard for his son, repeatedly putting him in harm's way. How could he tolerate that?
There had to be a limit to such reckless endangerment!
But Evadne knew nothing of this; the Ashbournes had kept her in the dark as well.
When Frederic was rushing to the Helgen hospital, Evadne was already on a plane heading back home.
The private jet touched down in Elmsworth that afternoon.
Onboard, Evadne quickly freshened up and changed into a sharp black suit, using
a touch of makeup to mask her weary complexion, trying to regain the vibrant, fiery grace of her usual self.
But her pale lips and the red lines in her eyes betrayed her poor state and immense sorrow.
Still, she had to hold herself together.
Jareth was right; if she fell apart, all of Thaddeus's efforts would be in vain.
Another year, another biting winter.
"Miss Evadne."
Jason Dempsey stood at the bottom of the plane's stairs, braving the chilling wind as he watched Evadne descend. A surge of emotion threatened to overwhelm him.
"Jason, it's been tough on you, holding down the fort here." Evadne gave him a faint, weary smile.
"Please, don't mention it."
Jason quickly draped a coat over her shoulders, almost adding, "Your safety is all that matters."
But he held back.
The person she loved most was still in a coma, with everything uncertain. He couldn't add to her pain.
"Would you like to go home and rest first?"
"No need."
Evadne took a deep breath of the sharp, cold air to clear her head. "I rushed back
to see Avery at the detention center right away. I have questions for him."
Elmsworth Detention Center.
The place was grim, with thick, imposing walls topped with barbed wire.
Though the sun was shining brightly, the air here felt heavy, as if perpetually shrouded in a suffocating fog.
"From now on, this is the only view Avery will have," Jason muttered through gritted teeth as he walked behind Evadne.
"I doubt he'll even have that for long," Evadne replied in a voice as cold as ice, devoid of emotion, as she strode forward.
Visiting room-
Evadne sat alone at the glass partition, her face expressionless, while Jason stood in the corner, keeping a close watch.
Soon, the iron door creaked open.
When Avery stepped into her line of sight, her eyes widened slightly.
For a moment, she could hardly recognize the man she had known since childhood, the one she had tangled with in endless rivalry.
What do you think?
