Chapter 1026
Gentle, polite, calm...
It felt like every beautiful word you could think of belonged to this man, even though his body bore its own scars. He never wallowed in self-pity or blamed the world for his fate.
Yet Evadne just couldn't bring herself to get close to him. Even standing next to him made her feel strangely suffocated. She couldn't explain why-just a gut feeling, deep and unshakable.
"No, thank you." Evadne wiped her tears away with her sleeve.
She remembered how, back then, she'd sobbed in front of Thaddeus, snot and tears everywhere, breaking down completely. Thaddeus had never handed her a tissue with careful politeness—instead, he'd just become her giant handkerchief. She'd wiped her tears on his shirt, even on his impeccably neat tie. He was always so put-together, so dashing, but she'd leave him a mess. And still, he'd hold her, soothe her, kiss her red nose, and let her cry as much as she needed. He was endlessly patient and gentle with her.
Chad gave her a small, quiet smile, tucking the handkerchief back into his suit pocket. His voice was soft and calm:
“Thaddeus is awake now. The doctors say there's some brain damage—he's not quite the same anymore. I'm afraid even if I tracked down that miracle cure, it might not change things."
"Ms. Evadne, just give him some time. Maybe he'll get back to himself, little by little."
"I don't care what he becomes," Evadne replied, her voice trembling but her smile determined. She brushed away the last of her tears, her lips curling up with a stubborn kind of optimism, "I'm still young. If it takes a lifetime to help him heal, well, I've got a whole lifetime. Isn't that enough?"
Chad's eyes darkened, a sigh escaping him so quietly it almost didn't reach her
ears.
"I've never envied anyone in my life," he said, his voice low and honest, "except Thaddeus."
Evadne looked at him, surprised.
He leaned in slightly, his posture composed and reserved, but there was a cold, bittersweet scent lingering around him. His deep voice sent a chill through the quiet hallway.
"Because he has you."
After leaving the hospital, Chad's usual calm seemed to crack. Riding in the backseat with Alexia, the atmosphere in the car was so tense it felt almost hard to breathe.
"Sir, are you alright?" Alexia asked, her tone gentle and careful. "Thaddeus woke up, but he's changed. He's cold to Evadne now. Wasn't this exactly what you predicted would happen?”
She hesitated, then continued, "Isn't this what you wanted? For Thaddeus to lose everything, to become nothing in the Abernathy Group, so you could finally have the upper hand?"
Chad stared out the window, his face unreadable, voice icy and sharp.
"Even if he loses everything, there's one thing he'll never lose."
Alexia frowned. "What's that?"noveldrama
"Evadne's love for him."
Alexia scoffed.
"That's only a matter of time. No woman can endure being ignored by the man she loves, day after day. Everyone has limits. Sooner or later, her heart will be in tatters, all the warmth drained out. How could she hold on forever?"
Her eyes were cold, almost inhuman. "Remember, Evadne married Thaddeus in secret, took all the heat, endured his mother's
nastiness, his emotional line
and even lost their baby. But the second his old flame came back, she left him without a word. That was just three years ago. So trust me, there are only two outcomes for them: separation, or worse."
Three years-she made it sound as trivial as three days.
Chad's features softened a little, the shadow lifting from his face. "Once Chasel is
gone, I'll have you get close to my brother."
Alexia knew this had always been the plan, but now that it was about to happen,
she couldn't help feeling nervous.
"Sir, Thaddeus hasn't lost his memory-he just can't feel anything. He doesn't care about Evadne anymore. Why would he care about
a stranger like me? He might even
push me away. I just... I don't want you to be disappointed."
"I never expected you to fall in love with him. He's lost his feelings—he can't love Evadne, and he won't love you either. But your presence can help Evadne lose hope in him, once and for all."
Alexia hesitated. "Will that really work...?"
Chad's voice was almost a whisper. “Do you really think Thaddeus's true love was Acacia Stirling?"
He closed his eyes, his face handsome and strangely unreadable in the gathering dusk.
Evadne had finally gotten special permission from her grandfather to visit, and she couldn't bear to leave the hospital. She sat quietly outside Thaddeus's room, alone and uncertain.
She felt lost. She didn't know how to bring back the love they once shared.
What do you think?
