Chapter 706
Elodie paid no attention to their conversation. She just wanted to get this over with and head home to rest.
Sprague didn't bother with small talk. "I've been in Italy for a few years now. Most of the work over there is pretty much wrapped up, and I'm thinking about coming back. Of course, I'm not asking for a spot at Silverstein Group headquarters, but I was hoping for a position at the Brightshore branch. That wouldn't be too much trouble, would it?"
Brightshore and Eldermere were practically worlds away from the main office- Sprague figured he'd come back first and sort out the details later.
Jarrod gave a faint, sly smile. "Big brother, that's not going to work. Right now, any staffing change shakes up the whole company. The old guard is holding down the fort at Brightshore. Who's going to welcome an outsider dropped in from nowhere?"
So, in other words...
"Is that a 'no', Jarrod?" Sprague's expression didn't change.
Jarrod sat with an air of unapproachable elegance. "Big brother, I thought you loved Italy. Now you're asking for this, and you're putting me in a tough spot."
Sprague's lips thinned. That comment hit home.
Did he want to leave in the first place? No. Jarrod had ruthlessly sent him abroad for years—all because of a woman, ignoring brotherhood for the sake of vengeance.
Sprague had considered blaming Elodie, but after two years away, he'd never expected she'd climb so high. At this point, no one could touch her without causing trouble.
He'd thought he could use Elodie as leverage over Jarrod, but now he'd have to think twice.
"If it's difficult, then let's leave it for now. There's plenty of time-we can talk about it later." Sprague didn't force the issue.
He turned to Elodie. "Elodie, you all go ahead and try the food. I'll be heading out."
Elodie nodded. "Take care on your way home."
Jarrod didn't get up, didn't even offer to see his brother out.
Sprague didn't seem to mind, simply turned and left.
As the door clicked shut, his expression turned cold. Jarrod wasn't giving him an inch. Before getting into the elevator, Sprague made a call. When the other side picked up, his face was grim. "I'll help you this time, but what I want-Mr. Aldridge can't go back on his word."
Elodie was temporarily suspended from work, but she still had to come in for questioning.
The next day, when she arrived, Jarrod was already there.
The conference room was huge. Klein and Clifford were present, along with a few members of Elodie's team and Lily.
As soon as Lily spotted Elodie, she strode over, face tense, and blurted out in front of everyone, "You don't ki sabotaged you just to win, do you?"
Heads turned.
Elodie looked at Lily.
Flustered, Lily insisted, "I'd never stoop that low! Believe what you want, but I only compete with skill. If you're not here, who am I supposed to compete with?"
She didn't want Elodie to suspect her just because they weren't friends.
Elodie could tell Lily wasn't lying—she was young, transparent, and wore her heart on her sleeve. Not the scheming type at all.
"I know," Elodie replied quietly.
Lily chased after her. "You know? Know what? You're not secretly cursing me out, are you?"noveldrama
Elodie simply ignored her and the steady stream of chatter at her side.
Others in the room noticed. Clearly, the two weren't close.
Klein caught sight of Elodie. "Don't be nervous, Elodie. Mr. Silverstein said you
two needed to talk, right?"
Elodie glanced at Jarrod.
Jarrod's gaze met hers, silent communication passing between them.
Elodie spoke up. "My data report was tampered with."
Clifford asked, "Can you prove it?"
Klein looked over, waiting.
Elodie had remained calm the entire time, about to explain-when suddenly
Klein's assistant burst in. "There's been an incident."
Jarrod's eyes lifted.
Klein asked, "What happened?"
The assistant turned to Jarrod. “Mr. Silverstein, there's been a serious accident at one of Silverstein
Group's factories. Ten minutes ago, it was reported that a senior worker made a mistake during an alloy smelting process, causing an explosion. He suffered severe burns and was rushed to the hospital, but... he died on the way from the injuries."
What do you think?
