I Refuse to Divorce

Chapter 16

Chapter 16

The window was lowered halfway and Mason’s arrogant face could be seen. He wore a black and white suit, as though he had attended a formal function. He looked very relaxed, which made Zoe look worse in comparison.

They locked gazes silently on the rainy night. Zoe’s lips were trembling from the cold. She wrapped her hands around her violin tightly as if it were the last glimmer of hope in her otherwise bleak life.

It was clear Mason was giving her an opportunity. All she had to do now was to yield and get in his car. Then, she would get a clean towel and a cup of hot water. She would not need to perform in a supermarket tomorrow morning. She could sleep on the grand, soft bed until she woke up. She could be his wife again.

However, she did not want that!

Zoe stood in the rain and looked at him wordlessly. The rain got heavier. It dripped on their eyelids and blurred their visions. After about a minute, Zoe shielded her head with a hand and started running in the rain.

She ran and stepped on a puddle, causing water to splash onto Mason’s car. Just like that, she ran past him. Mason heard every step she took on the rainy night and felt distasteful.

He did not get out of his car. Instead, he let her run past him. There was no expression on his face when he saw hers. There were bandages on her delicate fingers. She was wearing a rather modest outfit. No decent piece of jewelry was visible.

Be that as it may, Zoe did not yield.

The rain kept pouring. The car wipers were diligently brushing the water aside. Ava and the chauffeur said nothing. They knew Mason was in a foul mood.

Mason finally spoke after a long time. “Can you please explain something to me, Ava? Why would she work here instead of at the much better training institution? Does she like tormenting herself?”

Ava flinched. She paused for a while before answering meekly, “I thought I could make Ms. Zoe come home earlier by doing it! I can explain to her that it wasn’t your idea, Mr. Mason.”

Mason lit a cigarette and smoked it, looking all arrogant. He mocked her. “Do you think the fact that you did it out of your own will makes a difference to her?”

Ava relaxed when she heard what he said. However, Mason put out the cigarette and said coldly, “Get out of the car!”

Ava was shocked, “It’s raining out there, Mr. Mason.”

Mason leaned against the leather seat, raised his head, and sneered. “Zoe ran in the rain. Why can’t you do the same?”

“How do you figure you deserve to be protected more than Zoe does?” Property belongs to Nôvel(D)r/ama.Org.

Ava felt extremely embarrassed. She knew Mason was punishing her for taking matters into her own hands and suppressing Zoe. It was clear she could either get out of the car or lose her job. She had underestimated Zoe’s place in her master’s heart and overestimated her own!

Her legs trembling, Ava got out of the car. Her formal dress got wet from the heavy rain. Very soon, she was drenched from her head to her toe. Then, she started running in the rain!

The chauffeur was gobsmacked. Ava was a proud person. She had always looked down on people because she used to study in the same college as Mason. Nobody could have expected this to happen to her!

Mason sat at the back. He might be looking at Ava, but his mind was full of Zoe.

Why did he have to ask her to come back to him? She was too submissive and he did not like that about her. In fact, he had never loved anyone. He only intended to marry Lilith because of the strong impression he got listening to the violin while he was unconscious.

With that said, he no longer liked when Lilith played the violin after he came around. It gave him a headache! As for Zoe, he guessed he got used to her playing the violin!

He could not find the cufflinks a few days ago. Zoe would have been able to tell him where they were immediately. He was also shocked by the static when he went to the wardrobe to get changed. It was the first time it happened ever since he was married to her.

Zoe used to pay close attention to the humidity in their house when she was still around. She would wrap everything prone to static with insulating covers during autumn and winter. She had made his life easy when she was still around.

He enjoyed the good things she brought into their lives, but he had always neglected her.

Mason was lost in thoughts of Zoe on this rainy night. At last, he was confident he wanted to win her back because she was the most suitable person to be his wife. Not because he loved her.
