Not Your Doormat Anymore

Chapter 45

Although Kourtney had taken today off and didn't have many off days left, I had helped her so much already. Now that there was finally something she could help with, how could she say no?

"Alright then. We'll most likely be having lunch at noon. Just get up a bit earlier that day and I'll take you shopping in the morning."

I thought about it, and since Kourtney moved in, she hadn't bought any new clothes for herself. She kept wearing the same few outfits over and over.noveldrama

She instinctively wanted to refuse, but my next words stopped her.

"The clothes you have now aren't really suitable for that kind of occasion."

Dad said he was inviting a few people over for a meal, so we would probably need to make a few preparations at home. Dressing too casually wouldn't be appropriate either.

Kourtney lowered her head in embarrassment and tugged at the hem of her skirt. "Okay, I understand."

Not only was her job arranged by me but her housing as well. Kourtney had been so focused on paying me back as quickly as possible that she never even thought about dressing up. So, when an occasion like this came around, she didn't have a single decent outfit to wear.

I didn't pay much attention to her expression. I was already preoccupied with how

to deal with my parents, and I missed the words she almost said but didn't.

...

The next morning, as soon as I stepped into the department, I noticed everyone was looking at me strangely.

"What's going on?"

A doctor I knew well patted my shoulder and said seriously, "Even if you're in a hurry to meet your girlfriend, you can't be this careless. Dr. Ranford, you really messed up this time."

"What?"

My first thought was the file from yesterday, but didn't I already revise and resubmit it? What now?

Samuel stood there with arms crossed, his expression cold. "Seems like you were too happy with your beautiful girlfriend in your arms and forgot the most basic code of conduct for doctors. Your girlfriend came to the office to look for you, and in your rush to leave with her, you carelessly prescribed the wrong medication. The patient had a bad reaction during the night and almost died."

He listed my mistakes in an icy tone, and the others chimed in.

"Yeah, good thing Dr. Huxley was on the night shift and caught it in time, so he managed to save the patient. If not, we might be dealing with a fatality case right now."

Hearing their remarks, I roughly pieced together what had happened.

They were claiming I had prescribed the wrong medication, causing a critical incident with the patient that had almost gone beyond saving.

I frowned. "I want to see the medical records."

"What records? We all saw the prescription you gave yesterday. It was absurd. Even if you were in a rush, how could you prescribe something like that?"

Dr. Grey walked over, his expression grim. "Dr. Ranford, this was a serious mistake. Dr. Crowell has already approved your suspension."

"You're suspending me without even showing me the evidence?"

I had just arrived at the hospital, and they were already throwing accusations at me like they had rehearsed it. How could I accept that?

And Dr. Crowell—had he sorted out his own affairs before shifting the blame to me?

"You want evidence? Fine. Isn't this the prescription you issued, Dr. Ranford?" Samuel tossed a sheet of paper at me. It was the prescription that I hadn't revised.

I looked it over and let out a cold laugh. "Who says I wrote this?"

"Dr. Ranford, you can't dodge responsibility like this. Your name is right there, and

it came from your computer. Are you seriously saying it's not yours?"

The other doctors jumped in to fuel the fire. I glanced at Samuel, who had a smug expression on his face like he thought he had me right where he wanted.
