Chapter 562
Nathalie was left to care for Miranda. She had to see Miranda through her twilight years, even though her heart wasn't in it. Most of Nathalie's childhood wounds came courtesy of Miranda. Yet, after discovering her own backstory and realizing her very existence had wrecked Miranda's marriage, Nathalie pitifully accepted that maybe she deserved all Miranda's bitterness.noveldrama
Their mother-daughter bond felt more like a tangled mess of ill fate.
Nathalie, hit hard by these revelations, grew visibly worn out, retreating into a shell and becoming more withdrawn by the day. Meanwhile, Miranda, after moving into the villa with her own lavish bedroom and a personal maid, enjoyed a life of effortless luxury, which softened her demeanor over time.
Nathan, observing the stark difference between the frail Nathalie and the contented Miranda, couldn't help but feel a burning sense of injustice.
He lashed out at the servants, "What are you doing, treating her like royalty? Feeding her the best, housing her like a queen-does she really deserve it? Remember, she's just a beggar I picked up, not my mother-in-law."
The servants, taken aback, replied, "But sir, the lady asked us to treat her well..."
For the first time, Nathan went against Nathalie's wishes, fuming, "Why treat her well? Sure, she raised
the lady, but her child abuse is undeniable. The lady's survival wasn't her doing; it was pure luck and resilience on the lady's part."
The servants nodded quickly, "Yes, we get it now."
In her room, Miranda heard Nathan's angry words and felt a wave of shame wash over her for her past actions. But time wasn't something she could rewind, nor could she undo what was done.
From that day, her meals became more basic, and the maids, unable to hide their contempt, would occasionally throw in a cutting remark, "Did you really send the lady out to beg with a broken bowl when she was just three?"
Miranda, eyes closed in shame, could only bear it.
The maids continued, "How could you be so heartless? Nowadays, kids are cherished like treasures. How could you treat our lady that way? Lucky for you, our lady is kind-hearted-she didn't charge you with child abuse, and now she's even taking care of you..."
Miranda wished she could just vanish from the humiliation.
She often thought of running away, but her disability and nowhere to go kept her stuck.
Until Nathalie noticed her suffering and tried to comfort her, "Nathan is the only person who truly cares
about my feelings. His harshness et
towards you is just because he can't stand to see me hurt. I can't
go
against his decisions. You'll have to put up with it. You'll get used to it."
"Get used to it?" Miranda asked quietly.

Miranda's face turned pale.
"It's me who owes you an apology. You've gone through so much because of me."
Nathalie gave a sad smile, "I never really deserved to be here in the first place."
Nathan, walking in with a tray of pastries, stopped dead in his tracks when he heard Nathalie's self- defeating words.
He stood there, his eyes clouded with sadness.
Nathalie looked up, seeing his stern expression directed at her for the first time, and felt a wave of panic. He approached her, a chill in the air around him.
"I've done everything to spoil you,
worked my fingers to the bone to earn money, showered you with love, all to make you feel like a proud princess. So, why do you still think you don't belong in this world?"
What do you think?
