Chapter 701 The Long-Awaited Cherries
Vera struggled to hold Teddy. "Teddy, you can't eat that."noveldrama
Teddy opened his mouth, trying to nibble on Vera's lips. "Mommy will taste it for you."
Later, Vera handed the chubby Teddy over to Patrick.
Milo led everyone inside, where people were already picking cherries. They greeted Milo warmly.
Once inside, Milo waved his hand grandly. "Feel free to play around. You can pick and eat any cherries from the trees."
Vera looked at the clusters of red cherries, like strings of garnet beads, so tempting in their redness.
She reached for the lower ones, standing on tiptoe, while Teddy raised his tiny, chubby
arms.
The silver bracelet on her wrist gleamed in the sunlight.
Vera picked one and tasted it. "The ones in the shade are sour, but the ones at the top are sweet."
Molly looked up at the treetop. "I can't reach them."
Susan said, "I can!"
Even the tall Patrick and Sebastian looked at Susan, who claimed she could.
Shawn was about to use a stick to knock down the cherries, but he saw the ground was already covered with fallen cherries, some overripe and dropping with the wind.
Susan said she could do it.
Randall scoffed. "You can? What, you got wings to fly up there?"
Susan found a lush tree, slung her backpack over her shoulder, and hiked up her long, flowing dress.
She didn't care about her image at all.
Susan hugged the tree trunk with both hands, her feet climbing up, not afraid of getting dirty. She flipped herself up and stood on a branch.
Randall was fuming. He couldn't yell, scold, or curse!
Soon, Susan climbed even higher, happily picking cherries. "Vera, Molly, the ones up here are really sweet!"
Shawn was amazed. "Since when did my kid become a tree-climber?"
Sebastian watched Susan and laughed. "She's got skills."
Vera marveled. "She's a natural talent."
Patrick glanced at her. "Thinking of taking on an apprentice?"
Vera shook her head. "Nope."
No one noticed that Teddy, in Vera's arms, was staring wide-eyed at Susan. From the moment Susan started climbing, he watched her intently, not making a sound, his innocent eyes fixed on her.
Seeing Susan's actions, some people felt a stir inside. Vera quietly handed Teddy to Patrick and rolled up her sleeves.
Molly joined in too.
Sebastian and Patrick were speechless.
Randall was already looking up at Susan. "Randall, don't worry. I'll get you the sweetest cherries from the top."
Randall warned, "Susan, if you fall and break an arm or leg, or worse, hit your head and become a fool, I'm not taking care of you."
Susan moved to a thinner branch, holding on with one hand. "Randall, give me the basket Milo gave us. I'll pick cherries for you."
Vera didn't hesitate either. Patrick watched her like she was a monkey, as she climbed to the highest point.
Teddy looked up at Vera, his little neck craning.
Molly, lacking Susan's tree-climbing experience and Vera's training, needed Sebastian's help.
Every tree had a worried husband underneath.
Only Shawn moved around, advising, "Susan, be careful, sweetie. Don't fall."
He also cheered, "Vera, there are more up there. Go for it!"
And he complained, "Molly, why are you still in the middle? Susan and Vera are already at the top."
Sebastian, concerned for Molly, climbed up himself, holding onto her. "Dad, Molly's balance isn't great. She can just play in the middle." Others could stand on one foot and stay steady for a while. Molly would wobble immediately.
Sebastian remembered all of Molly's little quirks.
When Molly was in elementary school, Sebastian noticed this. So, while others rode bikes, he didn't let her, afraid she'd fall.
Shawn watched for a while, then went to play with Teddy.
Teddy had been watching Vera for a long time. When she didn't look at him, his little mouth pouted in frustration.
Soon, Teddy's clear, crisp cries echoed through the orchard.
Vera hurried down.
She handed the cherries she picked to Patrick, dusted herself off, and held the crying Teddy. "Okay, Mommy won't climb trees anymore. I'll hold you. Don't be upset, okay?" Randall was impressed by Susan's bravery. She dared to step on branches thinner than her wrist. She was quick too, picking all the cherries within reach.

She picked and picked, bending a branch under her weight. Randall's heart was in his throat, ready to catch her at any moment.
But Susan was agile.
Teddy was fussing, and Vera sighed. "He's probably hungry. There's no hot water here. I'll go feed him in the car."
"Vera, I brought some. The hot water is in Randall's trunk." The cherry tree's thick leaves hid Susan, but her voice came from above.
Vera glanced at Patrick, who went to check.
Sure enough, he found a large thermos in Randall's trunk, still steaming, along with Teddy's formula.
Patrick mixed the hot and cold water, made the formula, and brought it over.
Teddy was indeed hungry. He held the bottle with both hands, drinking the formula,
his eyes like clear, sparkling mirrors, adorable and heartwarming.
"Teddy, try a little cherry. They're really sweet," Vera said, holding him.
Patrick tasted a few. They were indeed good. He offered some to Vera, but she declined. "I won't eat any more. Too many cherries aren't good for you. Teddy's still nursing, and I don't want it to affect him. Take some to Dad. He hasn't had any yet." Reminded by Vera, Patrick went to find Shawn. "Dad, try these. Vera picked them." Molly was still in the middle of the tree, picking cherries with one hand, while Susan had already finished one tree.
She moved down quickly, Randall's heart in his throat, his arms ready to catch her several times.
When she reached the middle, her dress got caught on a branch. She tugged, but it didn't come loose. As she moved to free it, she lost her balance and almost fell. Luckily, she grabbed the trunk just in time, making Randall's heart race.
"Don't move. I'll come to help you. Don't move!"
Susan, still thinking about the cherries, said, "Randall, catch the cherries first."
