Chapter 9
Silence fell as the room filled with an awkward tension.
Sporting an unpleasant expression, Matthew clutched the saucer without knowing whether to put it away or toss it in the trash.
"What kind of heinous trick did you pull to make the pattern disappear, Gideon?" Elara questioned in fury.
Scoffing, Gideon replied, "The pattern was made with a special kind of ink that is hard to remove, but it's possible to do so with the help of heat and alcohol. It's that simple."
However, Elara didn't let up. "How did you know it could disappear with the combination of heat and alcohol? I get the feeling that you wanted to ruin the saucer on purpose! Apologize to Matthew at once, or else, you'll have to pay for his loss!"
Gideon's expression turned grim. Why was Elara being so unreasonable and saying such ridiculous things? Was it simply because Matthew was her bosom friend?
Alas, those words sounded disgusting to his ears. He was repulsed by them.
At that very moment, Matthew chimed in with a smile, "Calm down, Ella. Since Gideon could tell it was a fake, it meant he knew what he was talking about. I respect that. It's just 100 thousand dollars. It's not a big deal."
"He's just a farmer. What does he know about antiques?" Elara said scathingly. "He merely got lucky."
"Either way, he has helped me verify that it's a fake. I should thank him. Come. Allow me to offer you a toast, Gideon."
Matthew raised his glass, but Gideon ignored him, which triggered another outburst from Elara.
"Are you blind, Gideon? Matthew is offering you a toast, and yet, you're not even appreciating his gesture!"
Sneering, Gideon replied, "Sorry, but he's not qualified to drink with me."
"What did you say?" Elara screeched in
outrage.
The other people in the room were furious, too.
Someone mocked, "Pardon me for being frank, but do you still think you're the same Gideon Snow you once were? You're nothing more than a penniless beggar now."
A woman chimed in jeeringly, "You have no self-awareness at all, huh? Here's a word of advice for you. You'd better do a good job of making it up to Matthew. Maybe he'll be pleased with your performance and decide to throw a bone your way by offering the Snows a few contracts."
"Get on your feet and toast him, Gideon!" Elara demanded
Even someone as unaffected by external triggers as Gideon was riled up by their comments. He was just about to speak when Matthew jumped in to smooth things
over.
"Cut it out, guys. Gideon just came back to Goldspire. He hasn't adjusted yet. It's fine. I'll down the glass of wine first as a courtesy to him."
Elara sat down and shot Gideon a glare before snapping coldly, "See that? Matthew is such a thoughtful and magnanimous person. I'm so disappointed in you, Gideon, thought you'd at least know how to act with propriety. I didn't expect you to be such a narrow-minded man!
"Not only did you hit Eric and offend the Grosses, but now, you're even offending the Carters! Are you just that
full of yourself, or do you think the Snows don't have enough on their plate already?
"I advise you to hurry up and apologize to Matthew. Don't think my family is going
to clean up your mess for you. That's not going to happen!"
After Elara gave her speech, Gitleon smirked and picked up wine glass.
Seeing that, she nodded and said, "See? That wasn't so hard, was it? You'd better keep a humble attitude-the more humble, the better."
However, Gideon held the wine glass out in front of her.
Confused, she asked, "Why are you giving it to me? What's the meaning of this?"
"Since you're my wife, it's not wrong for me to ask you to apologize on my behalf, right? Plus, I'm sure Matthew is more than happy to drink with you, isn't he?" Gideon remarked with an unreadable smile, but his tone was laced with teasing amusement that made it sound like he was mocking her.
Elara's cheeks turned scarlet, and she puffed them out angrily.
Matthew, who noticed everything, sneered to himself before shooting his friend a look. His friend got the hint and took a photo before uploading it online, even making sure to tag the location.
News traveled fast among the scions in Goldspire. Eric and his men were on the way to the Snow residence when he received word that Gideon was at Twilight Bar, so he immediately rushed over.
Back inside the room, Matthew and the others continued to drink. All of a sudden, a young man said, "What's the fun in just drinking? Elara, why don't you sing us a song?
"That's right," another man chimed in. "I heard you're a good singer. You should give us the honor of hearing you sing."
"Well..." Elara was hesitant, but when she saw the expectant look in Matthew's eyes, she gritted her teeth and rose to her feet. "Alright. I'll sing a song, but do forgive me if I don't do too well."
sas
As Elara began to sing, someone looked over at Gideon and faunted, "Look, Gideon. Your wife is singing us a song. How do you feel?"
Gideon remained nonchalant, to which the women muttered among themselves in derision, "What a loser he is! He doesn't care that his wife is being asked to drink and perform for other men! What kind of man is he?"
"I know, right? He's nothing but a cowardly loser."
"Now, now. Don't be too harsh on him. Things are different now. Don't tell me you expect him to have the guts to stand up and do something "
Even as the women continued to chastise Gideon and deride him, he didn't react af all, much to the anger of the other people in the room. They had no reason to admonish him if he didn't blow up.
Just then, Elara was done with her song, but before she could get back to her seat, Gideon called out, "Sing another one!"noveldrama
Elara was speechless, while the others were confused.
"You sang pretty well. You're talented enough to be performing at bars. Why don't
you sing another one?" Gideon urged.
"You bastard!" Elara screamed as she trembled in anger. Grabbing the microphone, she was just about to throw it at Gideon when the door to the room
flew open
group of menacing; men came barging in.
"Gideon!" Erle roared.
Elara's expression stiffened akonce. How did Eric manage to find Gideon here? After seeing the number of people Eric brought with him, Elara thought that Gideon was doomed!
"Eric!"
Matthew quickly walked over to Eric and advised, "I heard that Gideon had the nerve to hit you! However, Gideon and Elara are married, and Elara is my good friend. Do you think you could..."
Eric was taken aback. He glanced at Elara before barking, "I don't care who tries to put in a good word for Gideon. I'm not letting him off the hook today! Matthew, take your people and go, or else, don't blame me for not showing any mercy!"
Matthew looked at Gideon and sighed, saying, "It's no use, Gideon. I can't help you. You'll have to pray that things work out for you. Let's go! Ella, why are you still standing there? We're leaving."
Elara hesitated. If they abandoned Gideon now, Eric would surely cripple him, and she wouldn't be able to explain things to Arnold. What should she do? She was caught between a rock and a hard place.
However, Matthew pulled her toward the door, saying, "This has nothing to do with you, Ella. Don't get involved. Let's go."
"But-"
"There are no buts. Your safety is most important!" Matthew declared before dragging Elara out of the room. Eric flicked his hand and instructed, "Close the door!"
Then, he turned to Gideon, laughed, and said, "I bet you didn't expect me to come looking for you, huh? Well, weren't you rather arrogant before? You think you're so tough, don't you? Come on, then! Try and hit me, won't you?” Gideon looked around at the dozen or so men before pursing his lips. "Is that all you brought with you?"
Eric was startled by Gideon's response, but he swiftly snorted in derision. "Oh, my! Are you trying to say that you can take on over a dozen men? Fine. Let's not waste any more time. Let the show begin!"
Instantly, one of the burly men charged forward to grab Gideon by the head, but before he could even get his hands on Gideon, he went flying backward against the wall. With dozens of bones cracked, he immediately passed
DUL
"What just happened?"
Eric's expression fell. The attacker had been a muscular man who weighed over
200 pounds! How did Gideon manage to make him fly 30 feet away with just a single kick It had to be a joke!
Alas, something even more terrifying was in store for him. By the time he wrapped
his head around the situation, he realized that the floor was covered in slumped figures.
All of his men had been taken down.
"You said you wanted to cripple me, yeah? Are you sure about that?”
What do you think?
