Chapter 36 Awkwardness
Chapter 36 Awkwardness
Liam was invited by Ethan to host the award ceremony at the annual general meeting of the Adams
Corporation. He was heading toward the venue after alighting from the MPV when his phone rang.
Liam did not hesitate to pick up the call knowing that it was from Amber. “What’s the matter?”
His icy tone belied his true feelings because he paused in his tracks to give Amber his full attention.
Meanwhile, William Yates, the vice president of the Adams Corporation, was standing by the roadside
to welcome Liam’s arrival. He waited patiently for Liam to finish the phone call.
“Well, I’ve forgotten my keys…” Amber was deterred from completing her sentence because of Liam’s
icy tone. What was she to ask Liam to head back to the apartment just to open the door for her?
After a short beat, Liam answered flatly, “I’ll be there in half an hour. Why don’t you wait for me at
Vincent’s first?”
Then, he hung up on her without waiting for her response. Ccontent © exclusive by Nô/vel(D)ra/ma.Org.
Amber stared blankly at her phone, embarrassment slowly eating her up. The way Liam spoke to her
just now was so cold that it sounded almost rude. He did not bother about manners anymore because
his resentment toward her was way too overpowering.
Tears started welling up in her eyes. After some time, she made up her mind to pull herself together
and not to be bothered by how Liam felt toward her. After all, their deal was about to end in six months.
Vincent’s was a niche café a short walk away from Liam’s apartment. The place was renovated in a
sophisticated way. Top-notch service was offered there, and everything cost a bomb. It was not the
type of place Amber frequented, and she did not have enough cash to afford a visit there at that
moment either.
Therefore, she had no choice but to wait for Liam in the lobby instead. The warmth in her body was
quickly sapped by the gusty wind blowing her way non-stop. Soon, her hands started shivering in
coldness.
“Mr. Yates, I’m afraid I won’t be able to host the award ceremony due to some emergency. I’ll phone Mr.
Adams later to inform him of my absence.” After ending the phone call with Amber, Liam walked up to
William and took his outstretched hand.
William responded pleasantly, “Don’t worry about it, Mr. Croft.”
As soon as Liam returned to the MPV, he instructed the driver to send him back to the apartment as
quickly as possible.
The driver knew Liam had agreed to show his support for Ethan at the annual general meeting.
Sensing the urgency in Liam’s voice, the driver thought something serious had taken place. “Mr. Croft,
has something bad happened to Ms. Cavendish?” he couldn’t help asking.
Mr. Baker the driver had been offering his service to the Croft family for decades. Because of that, he
knew the ins and outs of Liam’s relationship with Mia.
“Nope.” Liam threw a warning glance at Mr. Baker.
That was a hint reminding Mr. Baker that he had crossed the line. Terrified, Mr. Baker quickly kept his
mouth shut and focused his attention back on the road.
Liam called Ethan next to inform him of his absence. Knowing Liam very well, Ethan believed Liam
would not stand him up if it wasn’t for something super important.
Worryingly, he asked, “Liam, what happened? Is it something serious? Do you need my help?”
Liam responded after a short pause, “I appreciate your offer, but I think I can fix it myself.”
“Why did both Mr. Baker and Ethan assume that something serious has taken place? Is this the first
time I skip something important for an insignificant matter?” Knitting his brows together, Liam was
bothered by the disconcerting thought.
The truth was, he could hardly comprehend his own decision too. He wondered whether he was under
some spell just now when he decided to rush back to his apartment.
He could have let Amber wait at the café until he came back from the annual general meeting.
He had a feeling that he was losing control of things in his life, and he detested it.
“There’s no way I’m falling in love with Liam because we simply don’t belong to the same world!” He
could still vividly remember what she said over the phone that morning. Yet, he just could not stop
himself from caring about her.
