Chapter 655
Chapter 655 It's Best If She Understands
James didn't agree with Maggie when comparing their situation to that of Michael and Chloe. They were nothing like Chloe and Michael.
"Maggie, I know your ex-husband demanded eight hundred thousand dollars from you."
Maggie's breath caught, and fear flashed in her eyes. "James, it's not what you think. Please, let me explain."
"I'm not blaming you."
These were all the things Maggie did after they broke up, so he didn't see any reason to blame her.
Tears welled up in Maggie's eyes, dripping onto the back of James' hand.
He used to be most afraid of seeing her cry.
Not because he was intimidated by a woman's tears or found them annoying, but because he hated to see someone he cared about in pain.
Her tears made him feel like he had wronged her, like a judge passing a guilty verdict.
Whenever she cried, he felt as though he had failed her.
But now, though her tears still made him uncomfortable, it wasn't the same as before.
"James, I was wrong back then, terribly wrong. I thought I could make it right. Please, just give me another chance."
Maggie had no idea how much James knew about her and Jones.
He knew about the eight hundred thousand dollars, so he might know everything else, too.
"James, do you despise me?"
She feared he despised her for not being able to have children or for the videos Jones held over her.
James sighed, "I've already bought those videos back from Jones. Don't worry, there are no copies, and he wouldn't dare keep any."
Maggie stared at him in shock, unable to believe what she was hearing.
"You..."
"James, please don't watch those videos. They aren't real!"
Maggie was panicking, desperate for him not to see that side of her.Upstodatee from Novel(D)ra/m/a.O(r)g
Seeing her so distressed, James spoke softly, "I didn't watch them They've all been destroyed. Noone will ever use them to threaten you again."
Maggie looked at him through tear-filled eyes until he gently wiped away her tears.
"Don't cry. You've got a long life ahead of you. You'll meet someone better."
James was never one to be stingy or selfish when it came to love.
He loved deeply, which was why Maggie couldn't stop thinking about him.
Even now, though he no longer loved her, he remained kind and gentle, never speaking ill of her.
"You really don't care about those videos?"
James shook his head. Those videos were never something she wanted to make.
He believed everyone would make mistakes from time to time in relationships.
"And what about the fact that I can't have children."
"Children aren't a necessity in a relationship. If he loves you, it won't matter."
Maggie clutched the tissue he had given her wiping her nose. "I don't understand. If you don't care about those things, why won't you give me another chance?"
She had thought these were the barriers keeping her and James apart.
She couldn't understand why, even though he said he didn't care, he still secretly bought those videos back, and why couldn't they be together again?
Driven by paranoia, she wanted answers. She believed there was always an answer to everything.
Maggie knew it was foolish to ask "why" in matters of the heart.
But now, she couldn't help herself.
James didn't think she was foolish, but he also didn't have an answer for her.
"It's been many years. People change. If you ask why, I don't know how to answer that."
James had confronted Jones, given him money to buy the videos, and warned him not to extort Maggie anymore.
She didn't need to pay that eight hundred thousand dollars.
Maggie left, and James didn't know if she had come to terms with things. But it would be best if she had.
Lying in bed, James looked out at the sky, where a crescent moon hung.
He closed his eyes, feeling an unexpected sense of peace.
