Chapter 416 The Child's Surname
"Hello?" Emily's voice was calm.
"It's me." Michael's voice came through, just as she expected.
"Yeah, I know it's you." Emily sighed deeply, watching as Abigail tactfully left the room.
She walked to the window, looking at the swirling dark clouds in the sky. It looked like it was about to rain, just like her current mood-she couldn't quite tell if it was good or bad.
"I called just to... just to ask how you've been lately." Michael's voice was tentative.
There was no response from the other end for a while. He hesitated, then quickly changed his question. "I mean, I wanted to ask when your due date is."
Emily remained silent. It wasn't that she lacked patience or didn't want to answer.
She just didn't know how to respond.
Logically, she should stick to her original decision to cut ties completely.
But now that Michael was hurt, should she still be so heartless?
Could she really be that cruel?
Emily kept asking herself these questions. Just then, Michael spoke again, cautiously. "I just want to be there when the baby is born."
Michael's voice grew weaker, eventually fading away.
Hearing this, Emily felt a strange discomfort gnawing at her, like ants biting at her heart.
How could the president of Smith Corporation be so humble to her?
Yet, she found it oddly endearing... No! Absolutely not!
Emily silently warned herself that this path would lead nowhere good for her.
It was over between them.
Why should she feel any sympathy?
"What's the point of you being there, Michael? He won't remember you. When he's
older, I'll let him meet you."
Emily's voice was cold as she responded to Michael.
This time, it was Michael's turn to be silent. Emily was about to hang up the phone with
a hardened heart when Michael suddenly started coughing violently.
It was intense.
He had always been healthy, never having these issues before.
Emily was surprised and instinctively asked, "Are you okay?"
Michael quickly replied, "I'm fine... I just caught a cold recently."
Hearing this, Emily's eyes lifted, her lashes trembling.
Michael didn't know anything and was still trying to hide it from her.
She thought he would do everything to keep her, to bind her, to control her.
But now, Michael seemed different.
The call ended inconclusively. Emily didn't answer Michael's question, and the concern she felt was kept tightly locked inside. Michael didn't get the answer he wanted, but he felt unexpectedly satisfied and content.

Because he finally knew she didn't completely hate him, and he heard the voice he had missed for so long.
Michael never thought he would become so humble one day.
But the truth was, he had lost completely.
From now on, he would live every day regretting and feeling guilty for how he had
treated Emily. It was what he deserved, and no one could argue with fate.
Not even himself.
That night, Emily couldn't sleep.
The next morning, it did indeed start to rain lightly in Emerald City.
Because of the big mistake she made last night, Emily decided to go to the office to check on things.
At the very least, she needed to meet with the partners, apologize, or make up for the mistake.noveldrama
After all, she felt she needed to do right by Penelope in return for the advanced salary. "Emily, I think... since you're pregnant, Ms. Blair should understand! Besides, with your great design sense and dedication, any boss would love to have you. You don't have to stay at one company forever. Look at me, I quit Smith Corporation..."
Realizing she had mentioned Michael again, Abigail quickly glanced at Emily, gauging her reaction. Seeing that Emily wasn't angry, she quietly closed her mouth and thoughtfully placed an empanada on Emily's plate.
"Emily, have an empanada. I bought them fresh this morning."
Emily smiled, picking up a fork, accepting Abigail's gesture. "Abigail, my situation is different from yours. I'm helping Penelope because she advanced my salary. I have to finish the work I promised to do. Otherwise, even if I quit, I won't last long in this industry."
Then, Emily gently looked down at her belly, continuing to explain. "The baby is fine. The due date is soon, and everything is stable now. He will silently support his mom in doing what she wants to do. Right, Harry?"

"Harry?" Abigail took a bite of the steaming empanada, her mouth full of oil, and excitedly responded. "Is that the name you chose for my godson? Harry... It sounds great!"
Emily continued to caress her round belly, as if she could feel Harry's breath, smiling happily. "Harry is just a nickname."
Unexpectedly, Abigail, in her excitement, blurted out. "Haha, I knew it. Harry Smith sounds terrible. Emily, I mean, you wouldn't give the baby such an awful name. I think Harry Brown sounds much better."
Hearing this, Emily fell into thought.
Abigail didn't know what was wrong with her today, always saying the wrong things.
It must be the empanadas' fault; she usually wasn't this tactless! "Actually, I still plan to give the baby the last name Smith." Emily suddenly said. "After all, he is Michael's child. Even if I don't want to, I have to acknowledge that." Seeing Abigail's shocked expression, Emily knew what she was thinking and continued to explain. "I don't mean anything else. I just think the baby should have the last name Smith. As for anything else, I won't let the baby have any ties with the Smith family. Even if he wants to, I'll cut off that thought.
"Joining the Smith family would only harm him. I won't let him live in a place like Emerald City, full of decadence. It's not suitable for me, and it won't be suitable for my child."
Seeing Emily's determined stance, Abigail felt sad for her and even more indignant.
In reality, having worked at Smith Corporation for so many years, Abigail was well aware of the injustices and schemes behind the scenes.
That was the main reason she chose to quit.
The business world was like a battlefield, and she admitted that ordinary people
couldn't win in the high society battles of Emerald City.
That victory belonged to the heirs of high society.
They were just stepping stones, nothing more.
Although Emily's status was different, and she had married into the Smith family, she was still an outsider. Once she got involved in that battle, the only outcome would be crawling out, battered and bruised.
What do you think?
