Chapter 17
Marion explained, "For some reason, Mr. Duran's people said we stole some of their business. They want us to apologize and make up for it."
"Mom, Dad, we can't afford to offend Mr. Duran. Let's just apologize and compensate for it," Elara said grimly.
Smiling bitterly, Arnold said, "Mr. Duran wants us to compensate him with ten million dollars. Where can we get that kind of money?"
"What? Ten million dollars? He might as well rob a bank!" Elara exclaimed in anger.
Just then, she turned to Matthew and pleaded, "Matthew, can you help us?"
"That's right, Matthew," Marion chimed in. "You and Elara are the best of friends. Do help us. You can lend us ten million dollars first."
Matthew's lips twitched.
As it was, the Carters were in urgent need of money. He'd managed to gather a little over 20 million dollars by lying that Rachel thought highly of him, but he wasn't going to lend that money to anyone!
That being said, he couldn't possibly reject the Seymours outright, so he assured with a smile, “Ella, Mr. and Mrs. Seymour, you don't have to worry about anything. My family has a few connections, too. I'll head home and talk to my dad. I'm sure we can settle this if my dad meets with Mr. Duran for a drink.
"Someone like Mr. Duran doesn't need money. Ten million dollars is nothing to him. I'm sure he'll drop the matter as a courtesy to my dad!"
The Seymours were elated.
Clutching Matthew's hand, Marion said warmly, "Thank you so much, Matthew. Not only did you give us the chance to invest in your company, but you're even resolving such a huge crisis for us! How can we ever thank you? We should just give you Elara's hand in marriage!"
"Mom! What are you saying?" Elara protested, her cheeks turning red from embarrassment.
She also felt a bit uncomfortable. Although she had no feelings for Gideon, he was still legally her husband. She'd be the butt of everyone's jokes if she got married right after her husband died.
Matthew had his own thoughts about it, too. Elara was pretty, but she hardly came from a worthy background. Her family was far from being one of the elite, wealthy families. While she was good enough for him to fool around with, she wasn't qualified to be his wife.
Smiling, he said, "I'll talk to Ella about it some other time. need to head home and discuss this matter with my dad."
"Yes, of course. Let me walk you out."
Tugging Elara along with her, Marion escorted Matthew to the door. Arnold was the only one who remained seated on the couch. He was both fretting over the issue with Nino and grieving the situation with Gideon.
However, before the others made it out of the house, there was a commotion outside. A group of men in black barged in.
"Who are you? What are you doing? You're trespassing! That's against the law! Get out right now, or I'll call the cops!" Marion screeched.
Shawn Neely, the man in the lead, who was wearing a suit, looked more like a menacing thug. Sneering, he said,
11
You're the Seymours, right? You stole my boss' business, so we demanded compensation and an apology, but you've been dragging your feet!
"What's the meaning of this? You have no respect for Mr. Duran, is that it?”
Marion and Elara were scared witless.
Nino's men had come knocking on their doorstep-nearly 30 of them—and all of them looked rather intimidating.
Arnold hid Marion and Elara behind him. He stood squarely and said, "I've looked into this at the company. We didn't steal any business from Mr. Duran. I'm sure there's some kind of misunderstanding.”noveldrama
Shawn glared at Arnold and roared, “How dare you try to weasel your way out of this? If Mr. Duran said you did, that means you did!"
Arnold was also getting pissed. Meanwhile, Marion and Elara kept giving Matthew looks to beg him for help.
He had no choice but to force himself to step forward. Smiling, he said, “Hi. I'm Matthew Carter. My father is Jacob Carter. My father and I attended Mr. Duran's gala last year, and we even had the honor of sharing a drink with him."
"And?"
"Well, I was wondering if you could please give the Seymours a little leeway for the time being, for my father's sake?"
As soon as Matthew finished speaking, he went stumbling backward. Half of his face started swelling up.
Shawn scoffed in derision. "Hundreds of people have shared a drink with Mr. Duran before, if not thousands. Who the hell are you, huh? Who are the Carters? What makes you think you deserve any sort of courtesy?"
What do you think?
